What Is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is caused by the wearing away of cartilage, which is the knee’s natural cushioning. As the cartilage becomes thinner and thinner there is less shock absorbed and the two bones that meet at the knee may start to rub together causing pain.

What are the risk factors for developing Osteoarthritis?Knee Arthritis Physiotherapist downtown Toronto

Older age is a common risk factor of developing knee osteoarthritis; however, it is possible for younger individuals to develop it as well. Osteoarthritis can be heritable, or due to being overweight, which puts an excessive amount of pressure and load onto the knees. Athletics, including long term running, and/or repetitive stress injuries may also contribute to a greater risk of developing knee osteoarthritis. Evidence shows that women are more likely to develop knee osteoarthritis than men.

Signs and Symptoms of Knee Osteoarthritis:

  • Pain that increases with activity and gets better with rest
  • Stiffness, especially if you have been sitting for a long time
  • Decrease in mobility of the knee
  • Swelling
  • Difficultly getting in and out of chairs/cars and up stairs
  • Locking of the knee
  • Cracking of the knee when it is moved or touched

Treatment of Osteoarthritis:

Osteoarthritis is a condition that worsens over time, therefore it important to seek treatment.

Physiotherapy is also used in the treatment of osteoarthritis to strengthen the muscles around the knee and help increase the mobility of the joint.

Cold Laser Therapy can assist at the cellular and systemic levels to activate mechanisms in the body including cartilage regeneration, DNA synthesis, improved circulation, pain relief, and anti-inflammatory effect.

Wearing a Custom Knee Brace can help stabilize, support, and unload the affected knee.  By using a Custom Knee Brace our patients are able to increase their exercise tolerance, strengthening the muscles and supporting structures of the knee.

Custom Orthotics designed by our Registered Chiropodist can help place the feet and knees in proper alignment, preventing abnormal forces from being exerted on the knee and helping to prevent the painful wear and tear of cartilage.
