What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the use of slender, steel needles inserted just below the skin at one of 350 acupuncture points to harmonize the body’s chi.  According to Ancient Chinese medicine, the body is a balance of extremes.  If the yin and yang of your life force are out of balance, you become ill.  To rebalance your chi or life force, acupuncture needles are inserted at points in the body to allow your life energy to flow in proper balance.  In modern medicine these acupuncture points are areas of the body that allow nerves, muscles or connective tissue to be stimulated.  The stimulation results in an increased blood flow to the area and triggers the natural healing powers of the body.

What Should I Expect During An Acupuncture Treatment?

After an initial assessment of your condition, an acupuncture treatment is prescribed. You will then be asked to lie down, either face-up, face-down or on your side.  The position is determined by the needle placement.  You will then be draped appropriately to expose the area for needling while still maintaining your modesty.

Your Physiotherapist will carefully mark the acupuncture points and then clean the skin with stanhexidine or isopropyl alcohol.   At Ace Physio, we use only the highest quality, single-use disposable acupuncture needles to ensure a safe and comfortable experience. Once inserted, the needles will remain there for twenty to thirty minutes.  Sometimes the needles are heated or stimulated with electricity after insertion.

What Should I Expect To Feel?
As each needle is inserted, the patient should feel a gentle pinch.  When the needle reaches the right depth there should be an aching sensation.

Who Benefits From An Acupuncture Treatment?

Acupuncture is often used to decrease pain and provide stress relief.  Further studies have suggested acupuncture is beneficial for low back pain, fibromyalgia, migraines, post-operative dental pain; hypertension and osteoarthritis.  When performed correctly using sterilized, single use needles, Acupuncture is safe and has few side effects.  It is very effective as a combination treatment and is effective in controlling some types of pain.  It may be an option for patients who do not respond to pain medications and is a useful alternative for patients who do not want to take pain medications.
